About
The top covering was made of tachash skins, a word that appears for the tabernacle's cover, for coverings of the holy objects on the march (Numbers 4) and for fine sandals (Ezekiel 16:10). It is drawn here as weathered grey-brown leather.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
A covering of tachash skins lay above the rams' skins.
Stated directly in the text.
Exodus 26:14
- Speculative
Tachash was the hide of a sea animal such as the dugong (sea cow).
A common modern view from an Arabic cognate and Red Sea fauna; others read a kind of fine or beaded leather, a colour term ('violet', LXX), dolphin or seal. 'Badger' (KJV) is now widely doubted.
Alternatives: Dolphin or porpoise skins; Fine (goat) leather; A colour: violet- or blue-dyed leather; Badger skins (KJV)
- Artistic
The outer covering was a plain grey-brown weathered leather.
Chosen to match the dugong reading; the colour is unknown.
Scripture
14And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams’ skins dyed red, and a covering above of badgers’ skins.
5And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it: 6And shall put thereon the covering of badgers’ skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.
