About
Two and a half cubits long, one and a half wide and high, overlaid inside and out with pure gold, with a gold molding (crown) around it. Four gold rings on its four feet held the gold-covered poles, which were never removed. Inside lay the testimony, the tablets of the covenant. Its cover, the mercy seat, was pure gold with two hammered-gold cherubim (see Mercy Seat).
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
The ark was 2.5 × 1.5 × 1.5 cubits, of acacia overlaid with pure gold.
Stated directly in the text.
Exodus 25:10–11
- Plausible
The carrying poles ran along the ark's long sides.
The text says the rings were on the ark's 'feet' and sides, but not which sides; most reconstructions put the poles along the length.
Alternatives: Poles through rings on the short ends
Exodus 25:12–15
- Speculative
The ark stood in the centre of the Most Holy Place with its length and poles running east–west, towards the veil.
The text places the ark behind the veil but not its orientation. In Solomon's temple the pole ends could be seen from the holy place (1 Kings 8:8), which many read as poles pointing east towards the entrance; others turn the ark north–south.
Alternatives: Length running north–south, cherubim at the north and south ends
1 Kings 8:8
Scripture
10And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. 11And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.
12And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it. 13And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold. 14And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them. 15The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it. 16And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee.
