Leviticus 24

Pure olive oil keeps the lamp burning before the veil, and twelve loaves are set on the table every Sabbath. A man who blasphemes the Name is stoned, and the law of 'eye for eye' is given to limit punishment, the same for stranger and native.

How sure can we be?

  • Textually stated

Aaron and his sons kept the lamps in order from evening to morning, tending them each morning and lighting them each evening.

Stated directly in the text. Whether all seven lamps burned all day or only through the night is read both ways.

  • Textually stated

Every Sabbath twelve fresh loaves were set in two rows (or stacks) on the table, with pure frankincense on each row; the priests ate the old bread in a holy place.

Stated directly in the text; whether the loaves lay in rows or stood in stacks is not certain (see the table).

  • Plausible

Twelve loaves were arranged in two stacks of six, with frankincense on each.

Leviticus 24 gives twelve loaves in two arrangements (ma'arakhot) with frankincense on each; the Mishnah and Josephus describe stacks, while 'rows' is the plain English reading.
