Solid planks, a cubit thick at the foot
Held by The Talmud (Shabbat 98b) and most traditional reconstructions; R. Nehemiah (a cubit throughout) and R. Judah (tapering to a finger's breadth) differ only on the thickness
For
- Most translations render qeresh as "board" (KJV "boards", 和合本 "豎板"), and the rabbinic tradition describes solid planks.
Against
- The Bible gives no thickness. Boards 10 × 1½ cubits and a cubit thick would be very heavy to carry on four wagons (Numbers 7:8).
- Solid walls would hide the linen curtains with their cherubim, the finest work of the tent, from inside.
