About
Only the high priest entered, once a year on the Day of Atonement. Reconstructions usually make it a perfect cube, echoing the 20-cubit cube of Solomon's temple.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
The ark with its mercy seat stood behind the veil in the Most Holy Place.
Stated directly in the text.
Exodus 26:33–34
- Strongly supported
The Most Holy Place was a 10-cubit cube.
Inferred from the veil's position and the tent's 10-cubit width and height; compare the cubic inner sanctuary of 1 Kings 6:20.
1 Kings 6:20
- Artistic
Behind the veil the room is almost dark, with a faint glow over the mercy seat so that the ark can be seen.
The text gives the Holy of Holies no lamp. The glow is the lab's device for seeing the ark; it is not a picture of God's presence, which the text speaks of as appearing in the cloud above the mercy seat (Leviticus 16:2).
Leviticus 16:2
Scripture
33And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. 34And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.
