How sure can we be?
- Textually stated
On that day the high priest took coals from the altar and two handfuls of sweet incense within the veil, so that the cloud of incense covered the mercy seat.
Stated directly in the text. Only the high priest did this, and only on the Day of Atonement.
- Textually stated
Only the high priest went beyond the veil, once a year, on the Day of Atonement, and not without blood.
Stated directly in the text; the other priests served before the veil but never passed it.
- Textually stated
Only the high priest entered, once a year and not without blood.
Leviticus 16 for the Tabernacle; Hebrews 9:7 describes the same rule.
- Plausible
A linen turban is stated; its height and the way it is wound are reconstructed.
- Artistic
Behind the veil the room is almost dark, with a faint glow over the mercy seat so that the ark can be seen.
The text gives the Holy of Holies no lamp. The glow is the lab's device for seeing the ark; it is not a picture of God's presence, which the text speaks of as appearing in the cloud above the mercy seat (Leviticus 16:2).
