About
Every board stood in two silver sockets (96 in all), and the four pillars of the veil stood in four more. The silver came from the half-shekel ransom paid by each man counted in the census. The entrance pillars stood in bronze sockets instead, as did the sixty pillars of the court. The shape of a socket is not described; here each is a block with a slot for a tenon.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
One hundred silver sockets were cast from 100 talents of silver, a talent for each.
Stated directly in the text.
Exodus 38:27
- Speculative
Each socket was a solid block with a mortise for one tenon.
The text gives no shape. Rabbinic descriptions imagine a hollow block about a cubit high; others imagine a flat base plate or a spike.
Alternatives: Flat base plates; Hollow cubit-high blocks (Rashi)
Scripture
19And thou shalt make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for his two tenons, and two sockets under another board for his two tenons.
25And the silver of them that were numbered of the congregation was an hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and threescore and fifteen shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary: 26A bekah for every man, that is, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that went to be numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men. 27And of the hundred talents of silver were cast the sockets of the sanctuary, and the sockets of the vail; an hundred sockets of the hundred talents, a talent for a socket. 28And of the thousand seven hundred seventy and five shekels he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their chapiters, and filleted them.
