About
On the east, toward the sunrise, the camp of Judah pitched under its standard, with Issachar and Zebulun beside it, and it set out first on the march. Between Judah and the court, in front of the Tent of Meeting, camped Moses, Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary; the Levite clans camped round the other three sides, so that no wrath came on the people. Paths worn between the rows lead to the only gate.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
Judah camped on the east toward the sunrise, and Moses, Aaron and his sons camped before the Tent of Meeting on the east.
Stated directly in the text; the Levites camped round the tabernacle so that wrath would not come on the congregation.
Numbers 2:3 · Numbers 3:38 · Numbers 1:52–53
- Artistic
Paths of trodden earth run between the rows of tents and toward the court gate.
The text describes no paths. A camp lived in for months would wear tracks between its tents and to the one gate; they are drawn as darker ground only, and their lines are ours.
Scripture
3And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies: and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah.
38But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east, even before the tabernacle of the congregation eastward, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
