People in the court
Also: The figures in the courtyard
PERSON:COURT_PEOPLE
Seven people in the court: priests at the altar and the basin, two Levites, and a worshipper bringing a lamb to the gate.
About
The lab puts a few people in the court to show what it was for and how large it was. What they do comes from the text: priests serve at the altar and wash at the basin, an Israelite brings his offering to the door of the tent of meeting, and Levites assist the priests. How many people there are, where they stand, their poses and the moment are the lab's own choice: a typical moment for teaching, not a record of one day. No one is shown inside the tent. Tap a person to read about them.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
People in the court: priests serve at the altar and wash at the basin, worshippers bring their offerings to the door of the tent of meeting, and Levites assist the priests.
Stated directly in the text (Leviticus 1:3–5; Exodus 30:19–21; Numbers 3:6–8).
Leviticus 1:3–5 · Exodus 30:19–21 · Numbers 3:6–8
- Artistic
People in the court: the seven figures, where they stand, their poses and the moment shown are a reconstruction, a typical moment for teaching, not a record of one day.
The text describes the service but never one scene of it. The number of people, their places and their timing are chosen so that each task can be seen; on a feast day many more people would have filled the court.
- Plausible
The priests are shown barefoot.
No verse says so. Exodus 28:39–43 lists the priests' linen garments and names no shoes; later Jewish tradition (for example the Talmud, Zevachim 24a) holds that nothing came between a priest's feet and the floor of the sanctuary. The lab follows that tradition.
Exodus 28:39–43
Scripture
3If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD. 4And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. 5And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
