The inner courts
The Golden Lampstands
Four towering lamps lit at the Feast of Tabernacles.
What happened here
At the Feast of Tabernacles, according to the Mishnah, four golden lampstands fifty cubits high were lit in the Court of Women, and “there was not a courtyard in Jerusalem that was not lit up.” It was at this feast that Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”
Scripture
12Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Claims
- Plausible Four golden lampstands, 50 cubits high, with four bowls each.
- Speculative Jesus’ words about light were spoken at this feast; a link to the lamps is often drawn but not stated. (John 7:2, John 8:12)
Archaeology and sources
Known only from rabbinic tradition. The height, the four bowls and the ladders follow the Mishnah’s description; their positions in the court are a guess.
