John 11

Lazarus of Bethany falls ill and dies. Jesus comes four days later, tells Martha 'I am the resurrection, and the life,' weeps, and calls Lazarus out of the tomb. The council meets, and Caiaphas says it is better for one man to die for the people.

How sure can we be?

  • Strongly supported

Bethany is the village of al-Eizariya, about 3 km east of Jerusalem.

John puts it about fifteen stadia (about 2.8 km) from Jerusalem, which fits, and Eusebius and the Bordeaux Pilgrim (AD 333) knew Lazarus' tomb here.

  • Strongly supported

Bethany is the village of al-Eizariya, about fifteen stadia (under 3 km) east of Jerusalem on the far slope of the Mount of Olives, out of sight of the city. Its Arabic name keeps the name of Lazarus. In the scene it stands nearer the city than it was, at the edge of the model.

John gives the distance; Eusebius and the pilgrim Egeria in the 4th century knew the village and the tomb of Lazarus there.
