About
Judah, Issachar and Zebulun camped on the east; Reuben, Simeon and Gad on the south; Ephraim, Manasseh and Benjamin on the west; Dan, Asher and Naphtali on the north. The Levite clans camped nearest: Gershon west, Kohath south, Merari north, with Moses, Aaron and the priests before the entrance on the east. Tents here are drawn one per 400 men counted and much closer than a real camp of 600,000 men would be.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
Three tribes camped on each side under a standard, with the Tent of Meeting in the middle.
Stated directly in the text.
Numbers 2:2 · Numbers 2:17
- Artistic
The camp is drawn compressed, with the lead tribe of each side in the middle of its three.
Numbers gives sides and order but not distances or shapes; the text says only that they camped 'at a distance' around the tent. One tent stands for about 400 men, drawn as a low tent of dark goats' hair like those desert herders still pitch, doors turned toward the Tabernacle; the hills around are generic bare granite ranges, not a claim about where Sinai was.
Numbers 2:2
- Speculative
Each tribe flew a banner coloured like its stone in the high priest's breastpiece.
A midrashic tradition (Numbers Rabbah 2:7); the text mentions standards and ensigns but not their colours.
Numbers 2:2
Scripture
1And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 2Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father’s house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch. 3And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies: and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah.
17Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp: as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place by their standards.
