About
Five cubits square and three high, with a horn of one piece with it on each corner. A bronze grating of network sat under its ledge, reaching halfway up, with four bronze rings at its corners for the bronze-covered poles. It was hollow, built of planks. Its pots, shovels, basins, forks and fire pans were bronze. Every approach to the tent passed it first. Priests were forbidden to go up to an altar by steps, so a ramp is drawn on its south side.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
The altar was 5 × 5 cubits and 3 cubits high, with horns on its four corners.
Stated directly in the text.
Exodus 27:1–2
- Plausible
The grating sat inside or around the altar at half its height.
The text places the net 'under the ledge … halfway up'; whether it was internal or external is debated.
Alternatives: An internal grate holding the fire; A decorative band on the outside with the rings
Exodus 27:4–5
- Plausible
Priests went up to the altar by an earthen ramp, not by steps.
Exodus 20:26 forbids steps to an altar, and the Second Temple altar had a ramp (Mishnah Middot 3:3). The tabernacle texts mention no ramp; some think the priests stood on the ground or on the ledge.
Alternatives: No ramp: the altar was low enough to serve from the ground; Priests stood on the ledge (karkov)
Exodus 20:26
Scripture
1And thou shalt make an altar of shittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof shall be three cubits. 2And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass.
3And thou shalt make his pans to receive his ashes, and his shovels, and his basons, and his fleshhooks, and his firepans: all the vessels thereof thou shalt make of brass. 4And thou shalt make for it a grate of network of brass; and upon the net shalt thou make four brasen rings in the four corners thereof. 5And thou shalt put it under the compass of the altar beneath, that the net may be even to the midst of the altar. 6And thou shalt make staves for the altar, staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with brass. 7And the staves shall be put into the rings, and the staves shall be upon the two sides of the altar, to bear it. 8Hollow with boards shalt thou make it: as it was shewed thee in the mount, so shall they make it.
