About
Twenty boards stood on the south side, twenty on the north and six on the west, with two extra boards for the rear corners. Each had two tenons that fitted into two silver sockets. The text gives no thickness; this model follows the rabbinic view of a board one cubit thick at the foot tapering towards the top, and squared corner boards that overlap the ends of the long walls. Use "Frame" in Layers and "Explode frame" to see how they fit.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
There were 48 boards of 10 × 1½ cubits: 20 south, 20 north, 6 west and 2 at the rear corners.
Stated directly in the text.
Exodus 26:16 · Exodus 26:18 · Exodus 26:20 · Exodus 26:22–23
- Speculative
Each board was a solid plank about one cubit thick at the foot, tapering towards the top.
The Bible gives no thickness. The Talmud (Shabbat 98b) records two views: one cubit throughout (R. Nehemiah) or one cubit at the base narrowing to a finger's breadth at the top (R. Judah). The tapered form is drawn here.
Alternatives: One cubit thick throughout; Thin planks (a few fingers thick); Open ladder-like frames of two uprights and crosspieces (A. R. S. Kennedy), letting the inner curtains show through
- Plausible
The two corner boards were doubled, squared posts that closed the rear corners.
Exodus 26:24 says they were 'double beneath' and joined 'to the top… to one ring'; exactly how they were shaped is debated. Rashi describes a board covering the end of the side wall.
Alternatives: Mitred L-shaped boards; Buttresses standing at an angle
Exodus 26:23–24
Scripture
15And thou shalt make boards for the tabernacle of shittim wood standing up. 16Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and a cubit and a half shall be the breadth of one board. 17Two tenons shall there be in one board, set in order one against another: thus shalt thou make for all the boards of the tabernacle.
23And two boards shalt thou make for the corners of the tabernacle in the two sides. 24And they shall be coupled together beneath, and they shall be coupled together above the head of it unto one ring: thus shall it be for them both; they shall be for the two corners. 25And they shall be eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
