The builder's yard (τέκτων)
Mark calls Jesus “the carpenter” (τέκτων): a builder and craftsman who worked in wood and often stone. The yard holds roof beams, a bench and sawhorse, a plough and yokes, doors, and dressed stone blocks.
How sure can we be?
- Textually stated
Jesus is called “the carpenter” (Mark 6:3) and “the carpenter's son” (Matthew 13:55). (Mark 6:3; Matthew 13:55)
- Strongly supported
Τέκτων means a builder or craftsman, above all in wood, but the word also covers work in stone; in a village it meant roofs, doors, tools and furniture.
- Speculative
Justin Martyr (2nd century) says Jesus made ploughs and yokes. It is an early tradition, not a Gospel statement.
- Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 88 (2nd century).
