Nazareth
The small hill village where Jesus grew up: courtyard houses, a builder's yard, the spring, terraced vineyards and the brow of the hill, each marked with how sure we can be.

Key facts
- The angel Gabriel was sent to a virgin named Mary in Nazareth, a town of Galilee (Luke 1:26–27).
- Jesus grew up here and “increased in wisdom and stature” (Luke 2:51–52).
- He is called “the carpenter” (Mark 6:3); the Greek tektōn means a builder or craftsman, above all in wood but also in stone.
- Nathanael asked, “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?” (John 1:46).
- In the synagogue Jesus read from Isaiah 61; the crowd later tried to throw him off the brow of the hill (Luke 4:16–30).
- Nazareth was a farming village: rock-cut presses, silos and cisterns have been found around the later churches.
Key verses
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.Luke 1:26–27 · King James Version
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.Mark 6:3 · King James Version
45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.John 1:45–46 · King James Version
Talk about it
- Jesus spent about thirty years in an unremarkable village. What might those quiet years mean for our ordinary days?
- The people of Nazareth thought they knew Jesus too well to believe him (Mark 6:1–6). Where can familiarity make us deaf?
- Jesus worked with his hands as a builder. How does that shape the way you see your own work?
How sure can we be?
The Bible says
- Nazareth had a synagogue where Jesus read “as his custom was”, and the town stood on a hill with a steep brow (Luke 4:16, 29).
- He was known as the carpenter and the carpenter's son (Mark 6:3; Matthew 13:55).
Our reconstruction
- The courtyard house is a typical village house, not a claim about where Mary and Joseph lived.
- No first-century synagogue has been excavated at Nazareth; ours borrows its form from Gamla and Magdala (speculative).
Still debated
- The brow of the hill: Mount Precipice or cliffs within the town; the place is unknown.
