Above the village

Overview
From the ridge you see all of Nazareth: a small village of stone houses above the plain.
In the village

Village lanes
These packed-earth lanes run between dry-stone walls; there are no grand buildings here.
45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

Builder's yard
This is a builder's yard: Mark calls Jesus “the carpenter,” a worker in wood and stone.
And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
Read Luke 2:39–40; Luke 2:51–52; Mark 6:1–6; Matthew 13:54–58

Family courtyard
An extended family shared this courtyard: the oven, the loom and the ladder to the roof.
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. …

Synagogue
Inside a gathering hall like this, Jesus read from Isaiah on the Sabbath. Its form here is a guess.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. …

The spring
Below the village is its one spring, where women drew water every day.
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Winepress
Grapes were trodden on this rock floor, and the juice ran into the vat below.
And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

Terraces
The slopes are stepped into terraces of olives, vines and grain.
And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.

Threshing floor
On this windy threshing floor, sheaves were threshed and winnowed.

Tomb
Families cut tombs like this into the rock outside the village and closed them with a stone.

Brow of the hill
From the synagogue the crowd drove Jesus to a brow of the hill like this, but he passed through them.
29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
