Jesus at the feast
Also: John 7
Jesus went up to Jerusalem at the Feast of Tabernacles and taught in the temple.
John records that on the last and greatest day of the feast Jesus stood and cried out: 'If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.' John explains that he spoke of the Spirit whom those who believed in him were to receive.

- Textually statedBiblical text
On the last, great day of the feast Jesus invited the thirsty to come to him and drink.
Stated in John 7:37–39.
John 7:37–39
- PlausibleLater Jewish tradition
The 'last, great day' is the seventh day of the feast.
The seventh day was the climax of the willow and water rites in later Jewish sources; others take it as the eighth day, the solemn assembly of Leviticus 23:36.
Alternatives: The eighth day (solemn assembly)
Leviticus 23:36
- PlausibleLater Jewish tradition
Jesus' words about living water, and soon after about the light of the world, echo the water-drawing and lamp-lighting of the feast.
A widely held reading. The customs themselves are described only in later sources (Mishnah Sukkah 4–5, about 200 AD), which present them as late Second Temple practice. John does not mention them.
