How sure can we be?
- Textually stated
Bulls fall from 13 to 7 over seven days (70 in all), with 2 rams, 14 lambs and 1 goat each day; the eighth day has 1 bull, 1 ram, 7 lambs and 1 goat.
Stated day by day in Numbers 29:12–38.
- Strongly supported
Three tenths of an ephah of flour for each bull, two tenths for each ram and one tenth for each lamb; drink offerings of about ½, ⅓ and ¼ hin of wine.
The flour is stated in Numbers 29:14–15. Numbers 29 says only 'according to their number' for the drink offerings; the wine measures come from the general rule in Numbers 15:5–10.
- Plausible
“That great day of the feast” is the eighth day, the solemn assembly.
Leviticus 23:36 and Numbers 29:35 make the eighth day a holy convocation that closes the feast. If this is the day, Jesus spoke after the water rites had ended: the Mishnah gives the water libation seven days (Sukkah 4:1).
