Forty years in Pharaoh's house
Age 0–40 · 40 years · 33% of life
Moses was trained in "all the wisdom of the Egyptians" and was "mighty in words and in deeds". Then, at forty, he tried to deliver his people by his own hand and failed. God used the training later, but not on Moses' timetable. Preparation and readiness are not the same thing.
Key verseAnd Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

A stranger in Midian
Age 40–80 · 40 years · 33% of life
A third of his life he spent keeping another man's sheep in the desert, naming his son Gershom: "I have been a stranger in a strange land" (Exo 2:22). The prince became a shepherd, and the man "mighty in words" later says he is slow of speech. Hebrews says he endured "as seeing him who is invisible". The hidden decades were not wasted; they unmade his self-reliance.
Key verseBy faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
- CallingPlausibleInterpretation
Sent to Pharaoh
Age 80–81 · 1 year · under 1% of life
At eighty, when he had stopped expecting anything, God speaks from a bush. Moses' objections all begin with himself: "Who am I?" God's answer is not a better résumé but a promise: "Certainly I will be with thee." The calling fills barely a year on the chart and turns everything after it.
Key verseAnd he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.

Shepherd of a wandering people
Age 81–120 · 39 years · 33% of life
Moses spends his last forty years carrying a complaining people through the wilderness: the law, the tabernacle, intercession after the golden calf. Near the end he strikes the rock in anger and loses the land (Num 20:12). His fruitful years hold a real failure, and God still buries him with honour and calls him "the servant of the LORD" (Deut 34:5).
Key verseAnd thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
