Rameses
Also: Raamses (Exodus 1:11) · Pi-Ramesse · Qantir (modern site)
The store city the Israelites built, and the starting point of the journey.
Exodus 1:11 says Israel built Pithom and Raamses as store cities for Pharaoh, and Numbers 33 starts the itinerary there. Pi-Ramesse, 'the house of Ramesses', was the delta capital of Ramesses II (13th century BC).

- Strongly supportedArchaeology & research
Pi-Ramesse lay at Qantir and Tell el-Dab'a in the eastern Nile delta.
Excavations by Manfred Bietak, Edgar Pusch and others found the city's palaces, workshops and stables there. That this is the biblical Rameses is widely held.

The name Rameses fits the time of Ramesses II, but it may also be a later name for an older place.
Genesis 47:11 already speaks of 'the land of Rameses' in Joseph's day, which suggests the name can be used for a region by a later writer. The name matters for dating the exodus: see the date note.
