The child of laughter
Age 0–40 · 40 years · 22% of life
Isaac's early years are told through others: Sarah's joy, Abraham's test, the servant's search for a bride. When we first see him on his own, he has gone out "to meditate in the field at the eventide". A quiet life under a famous father is still a life God forms, and Isaac's comfort after his mother's death comes through Rebekah (Gen 24:67).
Key verseAnd Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.
- WaitingPlausibleInterpretation
Twenty years of prayer
Age 40–60 · 20 years · 11% of life
Isaac married at 40 and became a father at 60. Genesis tells those twenty years in one verse: Isaac entreated the LORD for his barren wife, and the LORD answered. His father's waiting had included Hagar; Isaac's is marked by prayer. Compare the two bands in the chart: the same promise, a different response.
Key verseAnd Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
- FruitfulnessPlausibleInterpretation
Wells in the valley
Age 60–137 · 77 years · 43% of life
In Gerar Isaac reaps a hundredfold, then gives up well after well to quarrelling herdsmen until he reaches Rehoboth, "room". His fruitfulness looks like yielding rather than fighting. The same years hold a divided home (Gen 25:28) and Esau's marriages, which "were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah" (Gen 26:35).
Key verseAnd he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
- RestingSpeculativeInterpretation
A long evening
Age 137–180 · 43 years · 24% of life
"I am old, I know not the day of my death," Isaac says (Gen 27:2). If the usual reckoning is right he lived another four decades, almost a quarter of his life. He trembled when he found he had blessed Jacob, yet let the blessing stand. Hebrews remembers that act as faith: an old man accepting God's choice over his own preference.
Key verseBy faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

Blind, blesses Jacob in place of Esau
Why here: Reckoned from Jacob's age when he fled to Haran (about 77, see Jacob); a traditional reckoning, not a stated age.
And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
