About
Thirty cubits divided by three gives about ten cubits a deck, less the thickness of floors and beams: roughly 9 cubits (4 m) of headroom. The model uses that even split.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
The ark had lower, second and third levels.
Stated directly in the text.
Genesis 6:16
- Plausible
Each deck was about 10 cubits high.
An even division of the 30-cubit height; the text gives no deck heights.
- Artistic
The cut-away decks are shown lit by oil lamps along the aisles and by daylight from the opening under the roof and down the stair wells; under the dark skies of the flood the lamplight shows through the opening.
The text does not say how the inside was lit. The lamps are a guess (oil lamps were common), and the shafts of daylight follow this model's reading of the opening a cubit high (Genesis 6:16). The extra light on the part being shown is a teaching aid.
Scripture
16A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
