About
Genesis gives the ark three measurements, a material, a coating, rooms, three levels, a door and an opening finished to a cubit. Almost everything else in this model, from the shape of the hull to the pens and the water jars, is a reconstruction; each part below says how sure we can be of it.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
The ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high.
Stated directly in the text.
Genesis 6:15
- Plausible
In metres that is about 135 × 22.5 × 13.5 m with a common cubit, or 156 × 26 × 15.6 m with a royal cubit.
The text gives cubits, not metres. Ancient cubits ranged from about 0.44 to 0.52 m; switch the cubit to compare.
Alternatives: Common cubit ≈ 0.45 m; Royal cubit ≈ 0.52 m
- Plausible
A 6 : 1 length-to-width ratio is in the range of modern cargo ships and would ride steadily in rough water.
The ratio follows from the text; how well the ark rode depends on hull shape and loading, which the text does not give. Stability studies of the ark have been published, but they rest on assumed hulls.
Scripture
14Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. 15And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. 16A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
7By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
