Pitch, inside and out
Also: kopher (Hebrew)
OBJECT:ARK_PITCH
God told Noah to seal the ark with pitch on the inside and the outside.
Materials
- Pitch: bitumen or plant resin (not specified)
About
The Hebrew uses a verb and noun from the same root: “cover it with covering.” The material is not named more closely. Bitumen seeps are common in Mesopotamia and it was used to waterproof boats and baskets; a pine-tar resin is another option. Peel the Pitch layer to see the bare planks.
How sure are we?
- Textually stated
The ark was sealed with pitch on the inside and the outside.
Stated directly in the text.
Genesis 6:14
- Plausible
The pitch was bitumen, as in Moses' basket and in ancient Mesopotamian boats.
Bitumen was the standard waterproofing of the ancient Near East, but Genesis 6:14 uses a different word (kopher) from the bitumen of Exodus 2:3 and Genesis 11:3.
Alternatives: Pine tar or another plant resin; A mixture of resin and bitumen
- Artistic
The model shows the pitch as a dark brown coat brushed along strakes of planks, thinner in places and glossier in the rain, with the seams showing through.
The text says only that the ark was covered; how thick or glossy the coat was is not known. The planks are a CC0 photo texture; the strakes, seams and brush strokes are drawn in code. The soft edge of sky light along the hull is a presentation aid, so the dark hull keeps its shape against the sky.
Scripture
14Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
