Mountains of Ararat
Also: Urartu · harei Ararat (Hebrew)
PLACE:MOUNTAINS_OF_ARARAT
Genesis names a mountain region, not a single peak.
About
Ararat is the biblical name of Urartu, the highland kingdom around Lake Van in what is now eastern Turkey, Armenia and north-western Iran; elsewhere the Hebrew names the land of Ararat (2 Kings 19:37; Isaiah 37:38, where the KJV has “the land of Armenia”) and the KJV has “the kingdoms of Ararat” (Jeremiah 51:27). Genesis says “the mountains of Ararat”, plural, and names no peak. Two traditions name one. The volcano now called Mount Ararat (Ağrı Dağı, about 5,137 m, with an ice cap and Lesser Ararat beside it) has been linked with the ark since about the 11th century. Older Jewish, Syriac and Islamic tradition points to Cudi Dağı (Mount Judi) further south, near Cizre: Targum Onkelos and the Syriac Peshitta read “the mountains of Qardu”, Josephus quotes Berossus placing the ship's remains “at the mountain of the Cordyaeans”, and the Quran (11:44) has the ship come to rest on al-Judi. No remains of the ark have been verified.
How sure are we?
- Strongly supported
“Ararat” is the region of Urartu in the eastern Anatolian highlands.
Ararat is a kingdom elsewhere in the Bible (2 Kings 19:37; Jeremiah 51:27) and matches Assyrian Urartu.
2 Kings 19:37 · Jeremiah 51:27
- Speculative
The ark landed on the peak now called Mount Ararat.
A tradition from about the 11th century onward. The text names a mountain land, not a peak, and no remains have been verified.
Alternatives: Cudi Dağı / Mount Judi (Targum Onkelos and the Peshitta “Qardu”, Berossus in Josephus, Quran 11:44); Another peak in the Urartian highlands
- Artistic
The plain where the ark is built and the mountains where it rests are generic landscapes.
The text names no place for the building and only “the mountains of Ararat” for the landing. The mountains are generated (steep slopes, crags, peaks and valleys) and dressed with CC0 photo textures of grass and rock; they are not a map of any real place.
Scripture
4And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
