This is a reconstruction. Revelation names the seven cities in order but not the road. The line follows the Roman roads between them; that the order traces a messenger's circuit is a common and plausible reading, not a statement of the text. Local details are labelled by how sure we can be, and where a phrase is read in competing ways the readings stand side by side.

In Revelation 1–3 John, on the island of Patmos, is told to write to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. The order follows the road that joined them, down the coast and round through the valleys inland, which is why many read it as a messenger's circuit.
This lab follows that circuit on a map, one city at a time, with each letter's key verse, a local detail and how sure we can be of it. Where a phrase is read in competing ways, such as Pergamum's “Satan’s seat” or Laodicea's “lukewarm” water, the readings stand side by side. Ephesus links back to Paul's Roads, where Paul spent about three years and wrote to the Corinthians.

Choices the reconstruction has to make where the text is silent, each with its evidence level and the reason for it.

Why: Dated by its dedicatory inscriptions; shown here so that photographs of Ephesus are not mistaken for Paul's city.
Revelation was written about AD 95, late in Domitian's reign.
Why: Irenaeus (Against Heresies 5.30.3, c. AD 180) says John saw the vision “towards the end of Domitian's reign”; most scholars follow him. The letters assume settled churches with a history, which suits a later date.
John of Patmos is the apostle John, son of Zebedee.
Why: Justin Martyr (Dialogue 81) and Irenaeus say so; Revelation itself never claims to be by an apostle, and Dionysius of Alexandria (in Eusebius, History 7.25) argued from its style that it was another John.
An island of exile
Why: Tertullian, Eusebius and others speak of John's exile; Roman relegation to islands is well attested (e.g. Tacitus, Annals 3.68), though no source names Patmos as a penal island.
The Great Altar of Zeus
Why: The vast altar on the acropolis, shaped like a throne and visible far across the plain, could be the 'Satan's seat' of the letter (Greek thronos, throne).
The worship of Rome and the emperor
Why: Pergamum led Asia in the imperial cult; Antipas's death 'where Satan dwelleth' fits pressure to honour the emperor as divine.
A town of guilds
Why: The guild inscriptions are real; that the letter addresses guild feasts and local bronze-work is a common, plausible reading.
A local echo of the city's falls
Why: The call to watch and the coming 'as a thief' fit a city twice taken by surprise.
A city of earthquakes and a new name
Why: Strabo 12.8.18 and 13.4.10; Tacitus, Annals 2.47; coins of Neocaesarea. The link to 3:12 is a reading.
A rich city that needed nothing
Why: Tacitus, Annals 14.27, records the self-funded rebuilding; Strabo 12.8.16 mentions the black wool, and ancient medical writers a “Phrygian powder” for the eyes. The links to 3:17–18 are a common reading.
The Cave of the Apocalypse
Why: Later tradition: the cave below the Monastery of St John (founded 1088) is shown as the place of the visions (Pleiades 648999241). The text names only the island.
There to preach, or to receive the vision
Why: Grammatically 'because of' could mean 'for the sake of' preaching there; few hold this today.
The lamp stand: a city that moved
Why: Ephesus's harbour kept silting up and the city later shifted; some see a local echo in 'move your lamp stand out of its place'. No ancient source makes the link.
The crown: the city's 'crown' of buildings
Why: Second-century writers praise the ring of buildings on Mount Pagos as Smyrna's crown; whether readers in John's day heard this in 2:10 is uncertain.
Unknown
Why: Acts names only 'the school of Tyrannus'. Suggestions that it lay near the agora are guesses, so it has no point on the plan.
Where careful readers disagree. Each view with who holds it and the evidence for and against it. No verdict.

The two Greek words differ by one letter. KJV follows "washed us from our sins in his own blood"; the 和合本 reads 「用自己的血使我們脫離罪惡」, "loosed". The Pulpit Commentary calls both readings very well supported, though the evidence leans to "loosed".

Both KJV ("Six hundred threescore and six") and the 和合本 read 666. The reading 616 matters for the date debate, since both numbers have been read as spellings of Nero's name.

All seven cities were in the Roman province of Asia, in what is now western Turkey. Ephesus is an excavated site near Selçuk; Smyrna lies under İzmir; Pergamum is the acropolis above Bergama; Thyatira lies under Akhisar; Sardis is the excavated site at Sart; Philadelphia lies under Alaşehir; and Laodicea is an excavated site near Denizli. Most can be visited, though only ruins or modern towns remain.
Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea, all in the Roman province of Asia in what is now western Turkey. Each receives a short letter in Revelation 2–3.
The order follows the Roman roads between the cities: from Ephesus north along the coast to Smyrna and Pergamum, then south-east to Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. Many scholars read it as the route a messenger would take; the text itself does not say so.
Revelation 2:13 does not explain it. Proposals include the Great Altar of Zeus, the temple of Rome and Augustus and the imperial cult, the healing cult of Asclepius, and Pergamum as the seat of Roman judicial power. The lab shows these side by side without a verdict.
On Patmos, a small island in the Aegean, “for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 1:9). The cave shown to visitors as the place of the visions comes from later tradition.
That reading, common in some dispensational teaching, treats the letters as a sequence of eras from the apostles to the end. Most commentators read them first as letters to real congregations of the 1st century, whose local details fit the cities, and then as words for every church: each letter says, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches” (Revelation 2:7). The text itself does not present them as eras.
