How sure can we be?
- Textually stated
Jesus: Hebrew Yeshua, “Yahweh saves”: “for he shall save his people from their sins.”
- Strongly supported
Three kings left out of Matthew's list (Matthew 1:8): Matthew goes from Joram straight to Uzziah; Chronicles lists Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah between them (Azariah is Uzziah). Both translations keep the difference. Commentators suggest Matthew shortened the list to make three sets of fourteen (1:17), or left out kings descended from Ahab through Athaliah, or copied an existing list as he found it.

Three kings left out of Matthew's fourteens: Matthew has "Joram begat Ozias" (Ozias is Uzziah); Chronicles lists Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah between them (Uzziah is also called Azariah). Leaving them out keeps the second set at fourteen; they were also kings remembered as especially wicked.
