How sure can we be?

  • Textually stated

Each pillar was 18 cubits high and 12 cubits round, hollow, with metal four fingers thick.

1 Kings 7:15 and Jeremiah 52:21. A circumference of 12 cubits gives a diameter of about 3.8 cubits.

  • Textually stated

The Babylonians broke up the pillars, the stands and the Sea and took the bronze to Babylon.

Stated in 2 Kings 25:13 and Jeremiah 52:17.

  • Textually stated

Each capital was 5 cubits high.

Stated in 1 Kings 7:16, Jeremiah 52:22 and 2 Chronicles 3:15. 2 Kings 25:17 gives 3 cubits, perhaps the ornamented part only.

  • Textually stated

Two rows of pomegranates ran round each capital: 200 each, 400 for both.

1 Kings 7:20, 42. Jeremiah 52:23 counts 96 'on a side' and 100 in all round the network, perhaps a different way of counting one row.

  • Strongly supported

Kings and Jeremiah describe the burning of the Temple, the palace and every great house, and the walls broken down.
