Bible illustration for I Samuel 17:38–40. A young person lifts a large crested helmet above their uncovered head while an older bearded man watches. With a mail shirt and sheathed sword on the ground, the most natural reading is taking off or setting aside military equipment.

I Samuel 17:38–40

Saul dressed David with his clothing. He put a helmet of bronze on his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail. David strapped his sword on his clothing and he tried to move, for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, “I can’t go with these, for I have not tested them.” Then David took them off. He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag which he had. His sling was in his hand; and he came near to the Philistine.

Bible illustration for Ezra 3:11–13. Two similarly dressed older men react in opposite ways beside a low rectangular stone platform: one cries while the other celebrates with raised hands. Mixed grief and joy in response to the same object is the clearest theme.

Ezra 3:11–13

They sang to one another in praising and giving thanks to the LORD, “For he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever toward Israel.” All the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the LORD’s house had been laid. But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, the old men who had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice. Many also shouted aloud for joy, so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard far away.
